National Institutional Ranking
Framework (NIRF) was established by the Ministry of Human Resource
Development on 29th September 2015. The framework outlines a methodology to
rank institutions across the country.
NIRF 2016
ranked institutions in four broad categories, namely, Universities,
Engineering, Management and Pharmacy.
NIRF 2017
ranked institutions in six broad categories, adding colleges as an independent
category and also introducing an overall ranking amongst all five categories.
NIRF 2018
expanded the framework to include more institutions with three additional
categories to cover Medicine, Architecture, and Law.
NIRF 2019
rankings continue with the practice of providing an overall rank in addition to
a separate rank for universities, and discipline-specific ranks in Engineering,
Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical and Architecture. General Degree Colleges
are also being ranked for the third consecutive year with much larger
participation of colleges.
The ranking
exercise for the year 2020 continues with the practice of providing a common
“Overall” rank in addition to a separate rank for universities and degree
colleges, and discipline-specific ranks in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy,
Law, Medical and Architecture.
The NIRF
2021 ranked institutions in ten categories — Overall, University, Management,
College, Pharmacy, Medical, Engineering, Architecture, ARIIA (Atal Ranking of
Institutions on Innovation Achievements) and Law.
