ANNUAL REPORT 2020-21

The Department of Statistics has always excelled in pulling off successful events throughout the year. The department lived up to its legacy of excellence once again even though the academic session 2020-2021 was a completely online affair and the interaction among the students was at an all-time low.

Seminar on Masters in Statistics and Industrial Application of Statistics:
On 7th November 2020, the department organized a seminar conducted by two of its alumni. Hemant Mundhra from the Batch Of 2014, who is currently working as Chief Manager at Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance enlightened the students regarding the applications of statistics in the industry and how to prepare ourselves well for the job market.
Aarushi Kapoor from the Batch Of 2019 who is currently pursuing her Masters in Statistics from Imperial College, London provided insights into pursuing master’s in the field and preparing ourselves well for getting enrolled in various Masters Programmes in Statistics offered by Top Universities in the World.

Department Elections: On 10th October 2020 and 5th January 2021, the department successfully and impartially held the elections for various posts. The following students were elected as post holders for the academic session 2020-2021.
Shreya Bhatt – President , Khushboo Shafi – Vice President, Paras Singh – Treasurer, Sanjivani Nathani – General Secretary, Tullika Garg – Cultural Secretary, and Paridhi Sharma and Akhilesh Sajwan as the newly elected Joint Secretaries for the session.

Fresher’s Welcome : The newly admitted students were welcomed in the department and were provided the opportunity to showcase their hidden talents with fun games, interactive quizzes, and flex their creative muscles. The students participated in the talent hunt with full enthusiasm by showcasing their talent and achievement through their videos.
The following freshers bagged the titles :
Ashis Agarwal – Mr. Fresher, Pallak Bareja – Ms. Freshers, Paridhi Sharma – Ms. Enthusiastic, and Shardul Chhabra – Mr. Enthusiastic.

Volition – The Open Mic : The department conducted its first flagship event of the year named Volition – The open mic with the tagline ‘Let out anything and everything.
The participation was open for all and appreciated all forms of spoken art be it, poetry, storytelling, singing, stand-up comedy, etc. The event was judged by the panelists who have already flagged themselves in the domain by their talent and dedication to the art. These judges included Vanika Sangtani – Storyteller & Blogger, Kush Sachdeva – Digital Creator, and Krtin Panchal – Content Creator & Experimental Photographer.
It was followed by an interactive session by Paritosh Anand, aka Billu Sanda – A famous vlogger, motivational, and TEDx speaker. Paritosh motivated the students to follow their passion and not to be afraid of failures, he also advised the students with content creation and answered their various questions.
Kirti Mundhra, Auritro Banerjee, and Shromona Chakraborty bagged the first, second, and third positions respectively, and emerged as the winners.

Seminar on Indian Statistical Services (ISS) : On 10th April 2021, the department organized a seminar for the students interested in Indian Statistical Services. The seminar was conducted by two of the alumni, Ms. Priyanka Sethi, Deputy Director, NITI Ayog, and Mr. Mukund Bihari, Assistant Director, DGCA. The panelists not only shared their journey to become ISS officers but also advised the students on how to prepare well right from their bachelor’s for a strong foundation. It was later followed by a Q&A session wherein the students cleared all their doubts regarding the ISS. Finally, the panelists had a little candid conversation with the teachers, and the session ended on a very good note. The seminar was a resounding success, students not only from the statistics department but of different departments from various colleges were present.
Undeterred by all the odds, the department managed to thrive and organized fruitful events periodically for the benefit and holistic development of the students.
