01PHYSICS

The Physics Department of Kirori Mal College has a very dedicated, energetic, dynamic, and research-oriented faculty of a group of twenty-nine rationalists. The department has a rich set of spacious laboratories – 5 Physics Labs and a Microprocessor and Microcontroller Lab. Though each Lab is dedicated to a particular set of experiments, each lab can actually accommodate almost all Physics experiments performed in undergraduate studies. Of the five Physics labs, three are equipped with dark rooms for performing optics experiments. The well-ventilated labs of the Physics department are designed to ensure cross-ventilation as well as to suit the operations of Air Conditioning in the sultry summers of Delhi. To be precise and concise, the following is a non-exhaustive list of experiments (experimental setups) that are performed in the Physics Department

Physics Lab 2 Dark Room – The point that is worth mentioning is the presence of a version of the functional Michelson interferometer. Michelson interferometer and Michelson- Morley experiment is credited for its null result and the uproar it caused that in effect resulted in the inspiration for postulation of Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity Spectrometers, gratings, Prisms, Monochromatic light sources, micrometers Fresnel Biprism and Solid iron optical bench setup Melde’s experiment Owen bridge experiment, headphones, capacitors, inductors Resistance boxes, fractional resistance boxes, galvanometers, ammeters, voltmeters Anderson bridge experiments, frequency generators, CROs Ballistic Galvanometer room, CDR Moment of Inertia experiment Young’s Modulus Physics Lab 3 Physics Lab 3 is mainly allotted to the experiment of the third year of BSc. However, this lab is also provisioned with experiments to cater to other years too. One particular aspect that deserves special mention is the dedicated space allotted to Robotic activities where students and teacher mentors work on projects like NASA Lunabotics.
Hall Effect setup A computer lab within Physics Lab 3 where as many as 30 High-end desktop computers are installed for working on Python, SciLab, C++, and Java Electromagnets, magnetic susceptibility apparatus Dark Room Ultrasonic grating Babinet Compensator Young’s Double slit experiment, optical bench Four probe apparatus Polarizer and analyzer Optical fibres Stefan’s constant experiment Physics Lab 4 Callender and Barne’s experiment to determine the mechanical equivalent of heat Platinum Resistance Thermometer Temperature regulated heaters Thermocouple Lee and Charlton’s experimental setup Searle’s apparatus to determine the coefficient of thermal conductivity ICs – 741, 7400, 7402, 7404, ….. Breadboards Physics Lab 5 Photoelectric effect experiment – An experiment that proved the particle nature of light Thompson method e/m using magnetron LEDs, voltmeters, power supply, ammeters ICs - 741, 7400, 7402, 7404 Cathode Ray tube Breadboards CRO
6) Microprocessor and Microcontroller Lab – as the name suggests, it is the lab for Microprocessor and Microcontroller. However, to utilize the space for the maximum benefit of the students, the lab also houses a number of N-Computing devices and desktops.
